How to Use the WMI Check Utility

This lesson goes into detail on how to download and use the WMI Check Utility. Before diving into a full discovery of your network, it is recommended that you run the WMICheck.exe utility from the server where you will host your PAD.  By running this utility against the devices you would like to inventory, you will be able to uncover potential access issues earlier, which will help to speed up the overall discovery process.

Choose IP addresses by indicating one of the following:

  1. Add - Add a single IP address to test
  2. Add by File... - Add a set of IP addresses by using an input file (see last step in this lesson for more information)
  3. Add IP Range... - Add a range of IP addresses

Configure the Test Options

Configure the Test Options

Leave all the options checked to perform a thorough test.  You can either use your currently logged on credentials OR you can enter domain credentials.  Whichever credentials you are using should have administrative access to the devices you are testing.  See the LIVE! Deployment Requirements document for more information on access credentials.  Once you have indicated the options and entered your credentials, press the Next button.

Execute the Test

Execute the Test

The test will execute against all IP addresses you have indicated.  Once the test is complete, the results page will be displayed.

Review Results

Once the test is complete, the scan results will be displayed.  These are the first indication you will have of any difficulties in establishing reliable access for inventory scanning purposes. Once you have reviewed the results, you can choose to save them to a file or copy to a clipboard.  The next step assumes you have saved the results to a file.

Keep the Results File

Keep the Results File

Save off the results to a file and save it for future reference.  If you run a test scan across your entire network, the results are very useful to cross-reference with the full inventory scan results that will be captured using Asset Vision®.

Complete the Test

Once you have reviewed the results, you can press the Next button and you will be greeted with the completion page.

Add by File Option

You can add IP addresses to a text file, separated by line-breaks or semi-colons.  You can then use this file to input ranges to test by using the "Add by File..." option.
