How to Determine the Progress of the Discovery

This lesson goes into detail about the Discovery Progress menu item in Asset Vision.

Navigate to: Setup > Discovery Status > Discovery Progress

The Discovery Progress Dashboard is a good starting point to determine how much of your environment has been successfully scanned and inventoried.  Clicking on any data point in the graphs, charts, and gauges will drill down to the detailed discovery status records that represent that subset of data.

Keep in mind the difference between Discovered and Inventoried.  A discovered device simply means that an active device has been found at a given IP address, but that does not mean it has been successfully inventoried.  Inventoried means that a discovered device has been successfully scanned by an inventory probe whether it be via WMI, SSH, ESX, etc.

The Discovery Source for a device provides insight into discovery and inventory status of that device:

  1. NMAP Probe - Device has been discovered by the NMAP utility, but has NOT been successfully inventoried.  These are the computers that might be experiencing discovery errors. Other probes that translate to this status are "Ping Probe" and "Ip Host Details Probe".
  2. SSH Probe - For UNIX-like devices, an SSH connection is performed to allow for inventory to be gathered.  Other non-Windows inventory options are "ESX Probe" for virtualization infrastructure and "SNMP Probe" for other network devices.  When these are shown, then inventory has been gathered for this computer.
  3. WMI Script Probe - For Windows devices only, this represents that inventory has been successfully gather for the device.

The New Inventory Over the Last 6 Months graph displays newly created inventory discovery status probe records.  Drilling down into the chart shows the list of devices with newly created discovery records for a given OS Platform.

The Discovered Devices by Class chart displays all devices discovered in your environment according to class.  So clicking on the Computer section of the chart displays all discovered devices designated as computers.

Computer Inventory

Computer Inventory

The Computer Inventory gauge provides a contrast of Discovered to Inventoried Computers in your environment.  Discovered represents all devices found in your environment that have been identified as computers.  Inventoried represents all discovered computers that have executed a successful inventory probe such as WMI or SSH.  Not Inventoried represents all discovered computers that have been successfully scanned by a discovery probe such as NMAP or PING, but have been been successfully scanned by an inventory probe.

The Windows Inventory gauge is similar to the Computer Inventory gauge, but provides details only for those computers with a Windows OS Platform.

Job Status Progress Bar

Progress Bar Details

The general progress of a scan job can be monitored real-time via the Job Status Progress Bar indicator, found in the Manage Scan Jobs section in Setup >> Discovery Setup >> Scan Jobs. The Job Status progress bar shows a visual interpretation of the progress of the currently-running job. If you hover the cursor over the Job Status field in question, a pop-up window will momentarily appear, showing details about the Scan Job:

  • Scan Job name
  • Number of nodes or objects scanned, with percentage.
  • The elapsed time
  • The estimated time to completion.

To update the Job Status as it is running, click the Refresh button (the circular dual-arrow icon, highlighted above) at the bottom of the window.
