How to Use the Manual Scanner

This lesson describes how to download the Manual Scanner. The manual scanner allows you to email a request to one or more users to manually execute a scan by clicking on a link in the generated email. The Users are selected from the Available Users view. The scan can be via an .HTA, .EXE or .DMG file type, depending on the computer type selected. The results are automatically sent back to the Asset Vision server.

Manual Scan Options

After selecting user(s) and requesting a manual scan the Manual Scan Options window loads.

  1. Token Available Until: By default the manual scan link will be available for a week.  You can select a new expiration date to shorten or extend this time period.
  2. Device Count: By default the device count per user is set to 1, but if your users may have multiple machines to scan you can change the device count.
  3. Device Type: Select whether the scanner used will be for a Windows-based computer or Mac OS X-based computer.
  4. Scanner Type: (Windows Scanner only) This determines the type of file that is used to perform the scan.  Some networks block executable (.exe) files so by default a HTML application (.hta) file is used for the scan.
  5. Manual Scan Options: (Windows Scanner only) By default the manual scan performs a Windows inventory scan only.  The available options extend scanning to include MS Software Tags, OS System Patches, and Virtualization infrastructure scans.

Stand Alone Scanner

The Stand Alone Scanner for Asset Vision allows the user to scan their environment similar to the Manual Scanner that is available through the Asset Vision user interface. The Stand Alone Scanner does not automatically upload the results to the Asset Vision server, so you do not need a network connection to run this scanner against your environment. To access the Stand Alone Scanner, contact Asset Vision support at [email protected] or make a request to your account representative.
