How to Enroll an OS X Device

This lesson explains how to enroll an OS X device into Asset Vision. Asset Vision supports OS X enrollment in precisely the same way as iOS devices (except there is no support for Apple Configurator-based enrollment). For this reason it is import to firstly familiarize yourself with the lesson, How do I Enroll a Device Already in Use?

The enrollment process for OS X starts with the generation of an enrollment email, which must be sent to the user of the workstation you wish to enroll. The lesson indicated above covers these steps.

  1. An enrollment email will be received in the inbox of the primary user of th workstation you wish to enroll if you have followed the initial steps outlined in How to Enroll a Device Already in Use.
  2. Click the link and one of several things may happen depending on how the OS X workstation is configured.
    • If Safari is the default browser, and there are no applications explicitly set up to handle profile configuration files, System Preferences will be launched. If this is the case proceed to the Install Profile step
    • if Safari is not the default browser a small mobile configuration profile will be downloaded to the default location.
    • In some cases, such as on a computer with iPhone Configuration Utility or Apple Configurator, clicking this link will try to load the profile into one of those tools. Do no accept this option, instead just allow the profile to be downloaded to the default location on.

Locate the Downloaded File

  1. In the event System Preferences was not automatically launched a file will have been downloaded to the default download location. In the example shown this is downloads directory.
  2. The file will start with the name Phase1Server and then be suffixed with a number. It will have the extension .mobileconfig.
  3. RIght-click this file and select Open With and then System Preferences.

  1. You will be prompted to install the Over the Air Profile Service.
  2. Click Install. You will then see the installation of the first phase proceed.

  1. When the OTA process has completed you will be prompted to install the Mobile Device Management profile.
  2. Select Continue. A second confirmation prompt will appear. This may be followed by a request to enter confirmation credentials. If required these credentials must have the authority to install a user profile on the workstation.

  1. Once the installation has been completed the two profiles will show in the profile list as user profiles.
  2. The installation date is shown.
  3. And the two profiles installed; a certificate profile and mobile device management profile.
