Basics of Importing
NOTE: Users should contact support or their account representative if they want to set up an import in their database. Users may use the import wizard on their own, but risk compromising data integrity if they do not set up the import mapping correctly.
Data can be added directly into data views manually but importing data allows for larger volumes of data to be imported more efficiently by saving both the time and effort that would be needed to enter this data manually.
Import plans and mappings are associated with a data view and can be created and selected for editing through the import wizard that is launched by clicking the ‘Import’ button located at the bottom of each data view. The data view from which the importer is launched serves as a guide for previewing the source data for the import and creating a map to the underlying metadata tables. Data can be imported into a single table or multiple related tables.
Import Feature on a Data View
- At the bottom left-hand corner of the data view there is an ‘Import’ button. Click the button to bring up the Import Settings message that will provide the user the option to import using a current import plan, create a new plan, or edit an existing plan.
Import Settings
The Import Settings window allows the user to choose to make a new import plan, edit an existing one, or import from a preexisting plan.
- Import Data View: This is the data view that the user will import into. It is also the data view that the user was viewing when they clicked the import button. This data view will serve as the guide for creating the import plan and mapping if the user selects "New Import Plan."
- Data Format: The user should check the type of source information they are importing into Asset Vision. The user has the option to import .csv, .txt, .xls, or .xlsx files or to import from a database connection.
- Choose File to Upload: If "File" or "Spreadsheet" were chosen as the Data Format, then the user must upload the file of the data they are importing by clicking the “Browse” button and selecting the file on their computer.
- Import Plan: If the user is importing with a preexisting import plan, then they should choose that plan from this dropdown.
- Import Mapping: If the user chose a preexisting import plan, the mapping that is associated with that plan will be displayed here.
- Import From Row: The row number where the importer will start.
- Ignore Last Rows: The number of rows that will be skipped at the end of the file.
Import Logs
When the user finishes their import, the Import Results window will pop-up providing information about how many records were created, updated, skipped, and failed.
- The user can view the import details in the Logs data view. They can access this data view by navigating to Admin > Data View Management and searching for the Logs data view.
- The user also has the option to download the logs as a .csv file by clicking the Download Log link.
