How to Use the ReNormalize Feature
This is a summary on how to use the ReNormalize button in Asset Vision. ReNormalization is the process of refreshing the data in the local instance to gain the most current normalized information stored in Chaklun, which is Asset Vision's main database. If you notice information about the Software Products and Operating Systems in your Local Software Cache that appears to be stale, you have the option to ReNormalize the Version that is associated with that Software Product or Operating System. This will replace the data with the current information in the main database, if it has been modified.
The ReNormalize feature works on data that has already been normalized. Data is normalized if the Local Software Cache table attributes Normalized Product Name, Normalized Friendly Version', and 'Normalized Publisher' contain information.
The Local Software Cache is located under Setup > Chaklun > Normalization > Local Cache > Software.
Note: To ReNormalize just the version, select only that version record. To ReNormalize an entire product, you must select all version records associated with that product. Also, the ReNormalize feature will only get information from Chaklun if the local software cache record for that software package is NOT user resolved.
1. Locate a Software Record with Stale Data
The Local Software Cache is located under Setup > Chaklun > Normalization > Local Cache > Software. This data view can be used to identify software packages normalized to software product versions that seem incorrect.
This record shows an example of potentially stale data. The Normalized Friendly Version is '9', however it should actually be '9 beta'. We know this because the Discovered information shows 9.22beta as the version.
2. Navigate to the Associated Software Product Version
Navigate to the Software Product Version table. One way to get here is under Admin > Data View Management and search for Software Product Version. Locate the software product version that was thought to be stale or incorrect.
3. Select ReNormalize
Running a query for "Software Product contains '7-zip'" will display the versions for the product. You would select version '9' because that is the version that was associated with the Software Product in the Local Software Cache. The ReNormalize button is located at the bottom of the table. After selecting the record you want to ReNormalize, click the button.
After clicking the button, this message will appear. Click Yes to start ReNormalization.
4. Wait for the Version to Appear Again
Now the version will disappear. The system deletes the old version so that it can be replaced with the current information in the main database.
After patiently waiting for a few seconds, hit the Refresh button at the bottom of the table.
5. Review new Version
Now the new version shows up and the install counts are adjusted accordingly. If the correct version already existed before the ReNormalize button was used, then only the install counts would be updated.
