How to Map an IP to a Location
IP to Location Mapping involves associating an IP range with a geographical location. This mapping will populate the Location field on the computer records that have IP Addresses in the range of a mapped location. This article will explain how to setup and implement IP to Location mapping from within the Asset Vision instance.
The inferred location of a device is populated when that device record has an empty location field. If a device's location does not have an IP to Location mapping then that location will be empty.
Create a New Location if Necessary
The first step is to create a new record for each location if it does not already exist. Navigate to Setup > Chaklun > Database > IP Location > Locations
- Click New.
Create a New City if Necessary
If a new city needs to be created for the Location record, the user can navigate to Setup > Chaklun > Database > IP Locations > Cities
- Click New.
Create a New Mapping from an IP Ranges to a Location
After entering all of the locations, the user can then navigate to Setup > Chaklun > Database > IP Location > IP Ranges, . Here you are able to enter IP ranges and associate them with specific locations.
- Click New.
Enter IP and Location Information
- Enter the information in the fields for the mapping:
- City
- IP Range (Beginning and Ending IP)
- Location.
2. Click Save.
Finally, after all of this information is entered, the daily job to determine location by IP will run and the user will start to see the Location field populated on Computer records. It could take 24 hours for all of the entries to appear.
