Optimize Agent Management

Once an agent is installed, information about them will appear in the Machines with Agents data view and sub views. These data views allow you to understand what machines have agents, as well as their status, and also provide some agent management options available either as a contextual menu per record, or as action buttons for multiple record selections.

Machines with Agents

Machines with Agents

The Machines with Agents data view is a comprehensive view of all machines that have or have ever had an agent installed. Below this view are default sub-views that help you to more easily understand what the current status of the agents installed within your environment.

  • Updated Agents: Displays Agents at the correct desired version, with an up-to-date configuration, and have transmitted within the last 7 days.
  • Problem Status: Displays Agents that have not transmitted within the last 7 days, and have a Status that contains an error. The error may be any issue with the agent, such as an upgrade or uninstall failure, or other agent problem.
  • Version Upgrade Pending: Displays agents that have not yet received an instructed version upgrade, either automatically or otherwise, as defined by the Required Version field (see Upgrade the Optimize Agent below).
  • Non-Current Version: Displays agents that are not at the current Available Version, but have not yet been instructed to upgrade.
  • Config Update Pending: Displays agents that have not received the latest configuration. The agents receive the configuration update automatically at the next scheduled agent transmit.
  • Waiting for Rescan: Displays a list of agents that have had a requested Rescan (see Rescan the Machine below).
  • Waiting for Uninstall: Displays a list of agents that have been instructed to uninstall that have not yet done so (see Uninstall the Optimize Agent below).

Rescan the Machine

Rescan
Schedule Rescan

The optimize agent has a hardware and software scanner that runs on a regular schedule. It sometimes may be desirable to force a Rescan of the inventory before the regular schedule. This can be done via the Rescan action.

  1. From any applicable Agent Status view, right-click on a single device, and select Rescan.
    -or-
Select one or more records from the list, and click Rescan Selected.
  2. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog.

The agent(s) that were selected will initiate an inventory rescan the next time they successfully transmit in the next 24 hours.

Upgrade the Optimize Agent

Agent Versions

Scalable Software periodically releases new versions of the Optimize Agent, providing newly-supported features and platforms, as well as bug fixes. In order to help work with current and new versions of these agents, there are three fields in the Machines with Agents main view and sub views that deal with Agent Versions:

  1. Installed Version: This field indicates the version of the agent that is known to be currently installed on a given machine.
  2. Available Version: This field will always indicated the latest shipping version that is available from Scalable software for your instance, for each specific operating system type. It also indicates the version to which an agent will be upgraded if instructed to do so, as well as the version currently available for download from the Deployment >> Agent Download section.
  3. Required Version: This field is populated by the version of the agent that has been instructed to be installed on a given machine. For Windows machines, this upgrade will occur automatically at the next transmission. For Mac OS, Linux, and Chrome OS, a manual upgrade is required.
Upgrade Action
Upgrade Confirm

Optimize Agents for Windows machines have the ability to be upgraded in place. The upgrade process itself is silent and not detectable by the user of the device, and requires no reboot of the device for upgrade completion. When a new agent is made available by Scalable Software, the new agent will then be able to be upgraded via an Upgrade action by the Asset Vision administrator. The Optimize Agent will stay at the current version until the Upgrade action is invoked, providing time for organizational change controls to take effect.

To upgrade the Optimize Agent:

  1. From any applicable Agent Status view, right-click on a single device, and select Upgrade.
    -or-
Select one or more records from the list, and click Upgrade Selected.
  2. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog.

The agent(s) that were selected will be upgraded immediately following the next successful transmit within the next 24 hours. Agents that are marked for agent upgrade will show the new version listed in the Required Version field.

Uninstall the Optimize Agent

Uninstall Action
Uninstall Confirm

There are multiple ways to uninstall the Optimize Agent. One of the simplest ways for Windows-based machines is to perform the Uninstall action via any of the applicable Agent Status data views:

  1. From any applicable Agent Status view, right-click on a single device, and select Uninstall.
    -or-
Select one or more records from the list, and click Uninstall Selected.
  2. Click Yes in the Confirm dialog.
  3. The agent(s) that were selected will be uninstalled immediately following the next successful transmit within the next 24 hours.

Manual Uninstall Methods

The Optimize Agent can also be uninstalled manually, locally on the device. Third-party remote management tools may leverage this local manual uninstall option as well. For more information, please see How to Uninstall the Optimize Agent.
