How to Configure Agent Proxy

Asset Vision enhanced Proxy support allows for the configuration of a single or multiple Proxies assigned to groups of machines. Asset Vision will automatically remember the last known successful configuration settings and use them if communication via a newly configured Proxy is not successful. Asset Vision also supports PAC files to leverage a more central management of agent proxy configuraiton. The Agent download page is  for downloads of Agents with pre-configured proxy settings. This lesson goes into detail about the configuration process for Agent Proxy and Proxy Group.

Add a new Proxy Group

Configure New Proxy Group

Before configuring any proxies, it is recommended that a Proxy Group be created. To do this, navigate to Setup > Agents > Deployment > Agent Configuration > Proxy Settings. Click New Config and enter a config name in order to create a new Proxy configuration. This will create a proxy group under the main Proxy Settings section, which will allow you to assign a specific set of machines to be included in the new group. You can create many proxy groups to fit the different kinds of proxy configuraitons in your organization. If you have one global proxy server for your organization, you may skip this step, and apply a proxy for the entire system.

Once you enter a config name and click OK, the Applies for Machines tab/page will load, and you may begin selection of the desired machines for the proxy group.

Specify Machines for the Proxy Group

Adding machines to a proxy group is done by means of applying dynamic or static filters to a view of all machines in order to get the desired list.

Create a Dynamic Proxy Group Filter

Create a Dynamic Proxy Group Filter
  1. For a dynamic proxy group filter, add a general search criteria (Ex: For the above example all agent machines in the 10.21.1.0 subnet will be assigned the New Proxy Group proxy settings.
  2. Click Save to save the proxy group filter.

OR set a static proxy group filter (continue below...)

Create a Static Proxy Group Filter

Create a Static Proxy Group Filter
  1. Select specific Agent Computer records
  2. Click Replace filter with selection to create static proxy group filter.

Filters with both dynamic and static criteria can be created by selecting Match Any, adding dynamic criteria to a static filter, and clicking Save.

Now that the machines have been defined for the proxy group, the rest of the proxy settings can be configured under the Config Details tab.

Configure Agent Proxy

Proxy support for Optimize agents can be configured using one of two options (covered below in detail):

  • Defining a Proxy Server Address and specific port.
  • Defining a PAC (Proxy Auto Configuration) File Location via URL.

Proxy Server Address option

Configure Agent Proxy

Under the Config Details tab, a Proxy Server can be defined. One server/port combination can be defined per group.

  1. Select the Proxy address radio button.
  2. Enter the Proxy Address: and Proxy port: default Proxy for all Agent Machines that you would like to be assigned to the Proxy Group.
  3. Click Save to save the settings for all

Proxy Auto Configuration (PAC) file Option

Configure Agent Proxy

Under the Config Details tab, a PAC (Proxy Auto Configuration) file location can be defined. A PAC file contains a set of rules written in JavaScript which organizations sometimes use to direct browsers to the correct proxy. Beginning with the 7224 version of the Optimize Windows agent only, the agent can use this PAC file to find the correct proxy to access the Asset Vision instance/server in the cloud. Care should be taken to use the PAC feature only with groups of Windows agents at version 7224 or higher.

NOTE: PAC File support is not enabled by default. If you would like to take advantage of this feature, please contact Scalable Software Technical Support at [email protected], or your Account Representative, and we'll enable it for you.

  1. Select the PAC URL radio button.
  2. Enter the Proxy PAC URL: which is the URL where the PAC File is hosted, for all Agent Machines that you would like to be assigned to the Proxy Group.
  3. Click Save to save the settings for all

Download Agent Installer with Pre-configured Proxy Settings

Download Agent Installer with Pre-configured Proxy Settings

Click on the Agent Download menu item to download the pre-configured Agent Installer.  Once you create a new proxy configuration the pre-configured agent installer will be available for download.  There is no need to reinstall an agent to a machine if it is assigned a Proxy configuration.  The next time the agent checks in with the server it will download the new settings and use them for the next communication.  If the new Proxy settings do not work the agent will fall back to the last successful communication configuration settings.
