License Manager Overview

The main purpose of the License Manager application is to allow a Software Asset Manager (SAM) to manage software licenses across an organization.

This lesson provides a general summary of the menu items for License Manager. Additional lessons in this manual go into more detail for each menu.

Licenses Owned

Licenses Owned

The Licenses Owned menu tab contains data views that that provide information on license entitlements that the user enters. It also gives users the ability to import data regarding the purchase of software and roll those purchases up, according to standard licensing rules into an effective license position.

Sub menu items under Manage include:

  • Manage Licenses: This menu has a dashboard that displays the information regarding the qualification of entitlements. From here a user is able to identify which entitlements will be used when calculating a license position and which entitlements needs additional information. The user can also add or import license information which will affect entitlement qualifications and license positions.
  • Current License Position: This menu item shows information regarding coverage status and the current license position. From this menu a user is able to view any unresolved licenses to determine a need for unresolved license extensions and upgrades.

Licensable Inventory

Licensable Inventory

The Licensable Inventory menu set represents all Licensable Products detected in the environment and how the License Liability for the product was assessed. These menus also include Issues that affect completion of the Liability Calculation and missing Product Expense data that affects our ability to determine the Liability Cost.

Sub menu items include:

  • Product Liability Overview: This menu contains a dashboard that displays every Licensable Product and Version(s) that were detected in the environment, grouped by how and on what kind of device the software was detected. Software can be detected as an installed Operating System, a software application Installation, a running Service, or as a User based License.
  • Issues: These menus display all Device and User Liability Issues or instances where the License Liability was not successfully calculated, broken down by device and user liability, and well as bringing to light missing expense data.

License Assignment

The License Assignment menu tab contains data that allows the user to able to make a clear distinction between License Liability and Assignment.

Sub menu items include:

  • Device License Assignment: This menu contains a dashboard that displays information for all detected software license liability. Users can view products with license gaps and license reconciliation for products. License gaps occur when licenses assigned exceed licenses owned. Assignment gaps occur when license assignment does not account for all license liability.
  • Auxiliary Reports: This menu contains reports that displays information about inventory and usage for virtual machines, named user products, and SQL Server clusters. Inventory and software usage data can help identify additional license liability.

Reconciliation Reports

Reconciliation Reports

The Reconciliation Reports menu tab allows the user to run a variety of general and specific reports that provide valuable information regarding license position.

Sub menu items include:

  • Product Summary: Provides a high-level overview of the liability of licenses assigned to products within the organization.
  • Product Version Summary: Similar to the Product Summary report, it breaks down the products into distinct versions, displaying the overview at a more specific level.
  • Adobe Products: Provides a version-specific overview of license liability with a focus on Adobe products that have been discovered and licensed within your organization.
  • Microsoft Products: Provides a version-specific overview of license liability with a focus on Microsoft products that have been discovered and licensed within your organization.
